What is an International Protection Application?
International protection is a legal protection provided by Türkiye to foreigners who cannot return to their home country due to persecution, torture, the death penalty or serious conflict. Within the scope of this protection, applicants may be granted refugee, conditional refugee or subsidiary protection status.
Refugee Status
Türkiye only grants refugee status to foreigners coming from European countries.
People who left their country for the following reasons can apply for this status:
Race
Religious
Nationality
Membership of a particular social group
Fear of persecution because of political views
Conditional Refugee Status
People coming from countries outside Europe and who will be persecuted for the above reasons are accepted as conditional refugees. These people cannot reside permanently in Türkiye, but the process of resettlement in a third country is initiated.
Subsidiary Protection Status
Persons who do not meet the definition of refugee but are facing the following threats may apply for this status:

Where to Apply for International Protection?
Applications are made to the Provincial Directorate of Immigration Administration where the person is located. Applications can be made at border gates, airports or at any time after entering the country.
Application Process Stages
Registration: Personal information is collected, fingerprints are given, and an identity document is issued.
Interview: The applicant is subjected to a detailed interview.
Evaluation: The Immigration Administration examines the application and makes a decision.
Decision: Acceptance, rejection or a different status may be proposed.
In case of rejection, there is a right to object within 15 days. It is recommended to obtain legal advice when necessary.

Who Can Get a Work Permit?
Applicants can work if an employer applies for them at least 6 months after application.
Conditional refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection can apply for a work permit as soon as they receive their status.
Only the employer can apply.
In some sectors such as agriculture and animal husbandry, a work permit can be obtained without a 6-month waiting period.
